Good news for seniors and their families
Going home after a hospital stay is often a delicate moment. The person's health is stable, but their strength has not yet returned, the home is not always ready, and the family wonders how to organise things. For these situations, the Luxembourg government has launched the "Out of Hospital" pilot project, presented on 15 September 2026 by the Minister for Family Affairs, Max Hahn, and the Minister of Health and Social Security, Martine Deprez.
What the project offers
- Who is it for? Older people whose condition has stabilised after a hospital stay, but who cannot yet return home or still need to choose a suitable place to live.
- Where? In dedicated units of at least six beds, within care homes for older people across the country.
- For how long? A stay of 8 weeks, extendable to 12 weeks on a justified request.
- Since when? The first residents have been welcomed since 1 October 2026, in a project running until 2029.
- With what funding? The Ministry of Family Affairs is investing €3.2 million per year.
Each participating facility signs an agreement with a hospital to ensure continuity of medical follow-up.
Why it matters
The project aims to prevent avoidable readmissions, to better prepare a move into a care home where needed, and to strengthen cooperation between hospitals, long-term care and home care. As Martine Deprez put it: "Health does not stop at the hospital door."
And then, back home
At SUR.lu, we support people returning home after a hospital stay every day. A well-supported recovery means a calmer, more lasting return home. If you are preparing for a loved one's return, do get in touch: we can organise home nursing and home help in advance, so everything is ready on the day.
